Are You Worried About Your Child Being Injured By A Firearm?

Do you think firearm safety should be a top priority?

Would you feel a lot better if you and your children were educated about firearm safety?

If you answered yes to the following questions you're not alone. Many parents have the same concerns. The good news is, I Got Her Six, provides parents and their children with the tools they need to prevent unintentional firearm accidents.

Ground School

Ground School is the discussion phase of our firearm safety program. It is meant to prepare children for the active learning portion of the education process.

Touch-And-Go

Touch-and-Go is the active learning phase of our firearm safety program. Children will be actively engaged in the learning process building muscle memory.

Check Ride

Check Ride is where we put everything in motion. We will analyze the behavior, correct mistakes, and give positive praise for correct responses.

Evidence Based Learning, That Works!

Most firearm safety education programs are ineffective because they leave out an important component of the learning process. Behavioral Skills Training or BST is an evidenced-based learning strategy that actively engages students in the learning process.

It consists of a four-steps for teaching new skills: Instruction, Modeling, Rehearsal, and Feedback. Telling your child not to touch a firearm without actively engaging them in real-world scenarios can be ineffective.

Studies have shown children will often engage in gunplay when they find an unsecured firearm. BST combined with in situ training will help minimize the risks of children engaging in gunplay. Accidents can still happen, but it's important to keep your firearms properly secure away from children. To learn more about the benefits of BST visit the National Library of Medicine.

A Life Cut Short

On June 4, 2013, the parents of Brooklynn Mae Mohler had no idea of the tragedy that would unfold later that day. Their beautiful 13-year-old daughter's life would be cut short while visiting a friends house. Her friend retrieved a 9mm Glock from a kitchen cabinet. She thought the gun was unloaded but it was not. Unfortunately, Brooklyn paid the ultimate sacrifice for someone else's negligence. Like many other parents who lost their children, they started a foundation to prevent other parents from suffering the same tragedy.

Stories like these are not uncommon. An estimated 1.7 million (possibly more) children live in homes with unsecured firearms. More than a third of all unintentional firearm tragedies happen outside of their own home.  Parent’s sometimes have the misconception they don’t need to teach their kids about guns because they don’t own one.  That can’t be further from the truth. ALL children and parents should be taught firearm safety.

TOGETHER WE CAN SAVE LIVES

Four Components of Behavioral Skills Training

01

Instruction

This is where we provide the student with a clear description of the skill or behavior we are teaching them. It includes the rational or the why for using the skill.

02

Modeling

For all of my actors and actresses out there, now is your time to shine. You want to next show the student how to perform the skill. It is recommended that you do this in person.

03

Rehearsal

This is the step where muscle memory is created. You want to have them practice, practice, practice! Create as many opportunities as possible for the student to practice and use the new skill.

04

Feedback

Give that positive reinforcement! After each practice or rehearsal session, tell the student how they did and be specific. Comment on the parts they did well on and give corrective feedback.

Common Myth Conceptions

  • Some parents believe that hiding their guns will prevent children from accessing them. However, 75% of children who live in homes with guns know where they are stored.
  • Many parents think their children are not capable of firing a gun. However, children as young as 3 years old may be strong enough to pull the trigger of a handgun.
  • Parents believe their children know the difference between real guns and toy guns, but in 16% of unintentional firearm deaths among children younger than 13 years of age, the gun was mistaken for a toy.
  • Parents often believe their child would not touch a gun because “he knows better.” However, studies have found that most children will handle a gun if they find one, even if they have been taught not to.
  • Some parents consider non-powder guns, like BB, pellet, and paintball guns, to be toys. These guns, which can fire at the speed of traditional guns, lead to nearly 22,000 injuries each year, especially eye injuries. -Nation Wide Children

Meet Your Captain

Crystal Millán

Hi, I’m Crystal Millán. I will be your Captain on this amazing journey. You’ve probably noticed I have a love for aviation. Ever since I was a young child I was fascinated by aviation. I dreamed of becoming a commercial airline pilot and came pretty close. Unfortunately, while I was in ground school my life took an unexpected turn. I was injured by a drunk driver and was no longer able to continue my education.

The accident made me realize how quickly dreams can be shattered. Today, I’m on a mission to make sure children get to climb the highest heights in life and live their dreams.Together we can make sure your child soars through life safely! It's "Plane & Simple" safety doesn't happen by accident.
